Tesla launches new-look Model Y in China
Tesla updates Model Y in China; deliveries in March with design from Model 3 and Cybertruck elements.
Tesla has unveiled a revamped Model Y specifically for China and other Asian-Pacific regions, signifying the first significant update to the model since its initial release in 2020. The company plans to start deliveries by March, but it remains uncertain when this version will reach Europe and the U.S., though a similar update with Model 3 previously took four months.
The redesigned Model Y incorporates features from the updated Model 3, including a sharper front end and a continuous light bar inspired by the Cybertruck. The vehicle ditches traditional tail lights in favor of a new 'cross-car lamp' design, with improved interiors featuring ambient light bars and a new touchscreen for rear passengers.
Despite the refresh, Tesla has experienced a year-over-year drop in vehicle deliveries in 2024 compared to 2023, a first in its history dating back to 2012. As Tesla continues to face competition in China amidst a price war and an expanding EV market, it has also teased potential new models that are expected to be cheaper but starting above $25,000.
