The Game Awards in 2024 implements a new rule change allowing expansions, DLCs, and non-standalone games to be considered for the Game of the Year category. This change makes Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree eligible, a move that's expected to stir discussions among the gaming community due to the game's widespread acclaim despite being just an expansion.

In addition to Elden Ring, other notable nominations in the Game of the Year category include Astro Bot, Balatro, and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth leads with seven nominations, sharing the top spot with Astro Bot for the most nominations received.
