The iconic Nokia N97 gets resurrected as a retro-inspired gaming handheld

The Nokia N97 returns as a retro gaming device with 12GB RAM and Snapdragon 855+.

: The Nokia N97 is reborn as the N97 Elite, a gaming handheld inspired by the original 2009 model. Sugar Cubes has transformed the iconic sliding mechanism to reveal a gaming controller rather than a keyboard. Equipped with a Snapdragon 855+ and 12GB RAM, it's perfect for retro gaming, though early reviews are critical. Currently available in China for CNY 1,499, it's part of Nokia's nostalgic strategy, reminiscent of its past.

The Nokia N97, first introduced in 2009 with a sliding touchscreen and physical keyboard, has been reimagined by Sugar Cubes as the N97 Elite. This gaming handheld device retains the nostalgic sliding mechanism, but instead of a keyboard, it reveals a controller layout, complete with a D-pad and buttons, minus analog sticks.

Under the hood, the N97 Elite is powered by a Snapdragon 855+ chip from 2019, partnered with 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage—specs that should satisfy retro gaming enthusiasts. Despite its technical capabilities, initial reviews of the device are not favorable, highlighting a resemblance to Nokia N97's past struggles in the competitive market.

Currently, the N97 Elite is available in China for CNY 1,499, equivalent to $205 USD, and offers special editions in Gundam and Dragon Ball designs. Its emergence follows the patterns of the original N97's journey, as both captivated the market initially but faced challenges with their dated technology and performance.
