Thieves steal $1.5 million worth of Oculus VR headsets, $900K in Microsoft goods during truck heists
Thieves stole $1.5M in Oculus VR headsets, $900K in Microsoft goods in truck heists, selling them in Florida.
Six men were indicted for allegedly masterminding a series of truck heists involving $1.5 million worth of Oculus VR headsets. These events, viewed as movie-style operations, witnessed the culprits surveilling distribution centers primarily in the Midwest and Southeastern U.S. The perpetrators executed their heists by following semi-tractor trailers from national distribution sites, stealing them during driver breaks.
In May 2022, they succeeded in intercepting a trailer with Oculus VR gear valued at $1.5 million, suspected to be Oculus Quest 2 headsets, from a Meta facility in Louisville, Kentucky. Reports highlight further thefts, including $940,000 in Microsoft goods and $530,000 of Harman-JBL products. The stolen inventory was transported to Florida, where it was sold for fractions of its worth.
The theft spree persisted into 2023, encompassing not only tech items like Logitech and Bose electronics but also non-tech merchandise such as CF Moto ATVs and products from Victoria's Secret and Bath and Body Works. This indicates a broader targeting strategy by the criminals and highlights the significant vulnerabilities in logistical operations involving high-value items. Recently, seven individuals were nabbed in Texas for a similar caper involving $6 million in VR headsets and other merchandise.
