TikTok appeals to Supreme Court to delay US ban; CEO meets with Trump

TikTok seeks Supreme Court help to delay US ban; Trump expresses support.

: TikTok is asking the U.S. Supreme Court to delay a ban set for January 19, 2025, after failed attempts to overturn it in lower courts. CEO Shou Zi Chew met with President-elect Donald Trump, who showed support for TikTok. The ban stems from national security concerns about data access by the Chinese government through parent company ByteDance. TikTok argues the ban violates First Amendment rights and seeks a delay for court review.

TikTok has taken its case to the U.S. Supreme Court in hopes of delaying a ban set for January 19, 2025. This appeal follows unsuccessful attempts to overturn the law in lower courts, which argue that the ban violates user First Amendment rights and unfairly targets the app due to its Chinese ownership.

CEO Shou Zi Chew recently met with President-elect Donald Trump in Florida, who expressed a willingness to consider the issue, stating his fondness for the app. Trump, who has previously promised to 'save' TikTok and joined the platform earlier this year, will be inaugurated on January 20, just a day after the ban is scheduled to take effect.

The Justice Department justifies the ban on national security grounds, suggesting that ByteDance allows the Chinese government to access American data and manipulate app content. TikTok and ByteDance counter this claim by asserting users’ rights to choose what content to view and urging for a modest delay to resolve the matter with the incoming administration.
