Trouble connecting controllers to your Switch 2? Here's why
Switch 2's new protocols limit connection with original third-party controllers, needing firmware updates.

First, Nintendo introduced a new communication protocol with the Switch 2, especially for the Joy-Con 2 and Pro Controller 2. Older controllers still work but can no longer wake the console from sleep mode. This is likely due to added features like the new “C” button and support for in-game voice chat.
Second, many third-party controllers from brands like 8BitDo and Gulikit initially faced connection issues. They required firmware updates to restore compatibility, but even with updates, they still cannot wake the Switch 2 from sleep like the new official controllers can.
Third, Nintendo’s official support recommends updating both the console and controllers to the latest firmware. It also advises pairing through Settings > Controllers & Accessories, or using a direct USB-C connection to the dock when syncing. Notably, when Bluetooth audio is enabled, only two wireless controllers can be used simultaneously.
Fourth, users on Reddit found practical fixes: connecting the controller via USB-C to the dock before syncing helps, and making sure the controller isn’t connected to other devices is important. One common issue was underpowered docks—especially when using power strips—which caused pairing failures.
Finally, although most older controllers still function for basic gameplay, they lack full feature support on the Switch 2. Wake-from-sleep is exclusive to the new models, and users should expect limited compatibility unless using updated firmware and following Nintendo’s setup instructions.
