Uber and WeRide launch robotaxi service in Abu Dhabi

Uber and WeRide debut robotaxi service in Abu Dhabi with human safety operators.

: Uber and WeRide have launched a robotaxi service in Abu Dhabi, marking Uber's first international autonomous offering. Initial operations, involving human safety operators, will cover Saadiyat Island, Yas Island, and routes to Zayed International Airport. Future expansions will include a fully driverless launch in 2025 and cooperation with Tawasul Transport for fleet operations.

Ride-hail giant Uber partners with Chinese company WeRide to initiate a robotaxi service in Abu Dhabi. This collaboration signifies Uber's first venture into an international autonomous transport market.

Despite the launch, investor confidence remains shaky with a 10% drop following Waymo's Miami robotaxi plans. These developments suggest a gradual shift towards autonomy, though Uber is positioned as a connectivity hub for these services.

The service startup includes human safety operators, set to transition to full autonomy by 2025. Initially targeting routes on Saadiyat and Yas Islands and to Zayed Airport, Uber and WeRide will team up with local Tawasul Transport for operational logistics.
