USB-C is now effectively mandatory in Europe as the new charging era begins

EU enforces USB-C as standard for devices, affecting Apple and reducing e-waste.

: The European Union has mandated USB-C as the standard charging port for small devices, affecting mobile phones, tablets, and cameras by the end of 2024. Laptops will be included in this requirement by 2026. This regulation aims to improve charger compatibility and reduce e-waste, despite resistance from Apple over innovation concerns. The move is expected to save consumers up to €250 million annually.

The European Union has finalized its decision to enforce USB-C as the standard for data communication and battery charging in small devices across its member states. This mandate applies to all mobile phones, tablets, and cameras sold in the EU by the end of 2024. By 2026, the regulation will also encompass laptops, compelling manufacturers to adopt USB-C for all included devices. The EU aims to simplify charging solutions and decrease electronic waste by ensuring devices support interoperability with a universal charger.

Apple, a key player in the technology industry known for its proprietary connectors, notably resisted this mandate, citing concerns over reduced innovation and negative economic impact. Despite its objections, Apple's SVP of Marketing, Greg Joswiak, confirmed that the company will comply with the regulation. The iPhone 15, launched last year, was the first Apple product to abandon the proprietary Lightning port in favor of the USB-C standard, reflecting the growing pressure from European regulations.

EU estimates suggest that the ability to reuse old chargers could save consumers up to €250 million annually and address the significant 11,000 tonnes of e-waste generated each year by discarded chargers. The introduction of a standardized charging port is set to expand consumer choices and challenge the 'lock-in' model of exclusive brand ecosystems. As part of this initiative, the EU also aims to equalize charging speeds for fast-charging devices to enhance consumer experience.
