Valve's new game racks up 16K concurrent players, without officially existing

Valve's new MOBA shooter Deadlock gains 16.6k concurrent players during a soft launch.

: Valve's upcoming game, Deadlock, has garnered over 16,000 concurrent players without an official announcement. Reportedly a competitive MOBA shooter, it's described as a mix of Valorant, Overwatch, Dota 2, and Team Fortress 2. Development, led by IceFrog, began in 2018, with leaked screenshots showcasing a steampunk aesthetic.

Valve's game Deadlock, not officially announced yet, saw over 16,600 concurrent players over the weekend according to SteamDB. Described as a competitive MOBA shooter, it's being seen as a potential successor to popular titles like Dota 2 and Overwatch by industry analysts like Tyler McVicker.

Development of Deadlock started in 2018 as a collaboration with IceFrog, the creator behind the original Defense of the Ancients mod. Set in a fantasy steampunk world, the game features elements such as skyrails reminiscent of Bioshock Infinite. Leaked screenshots have been circulating, showing heroes like Grey Talon and confirming its advanced development state.

While Valve remains quiet regarding an official announcement, it did trademark the name Deadlock back in June, hinting at future plans. With the game already attracting a significant player base and generated buzz, it appears ready for a broader public reveal soon. Eurogamer and other sources speculate this might be Valve's attempt to test player reception before a major PR push.
