Ys X: Nordics Review (Switch)
Ys X: Nordics offers fresh gameplay, exciting combat, and exploration, with mixed performance on Nintendo Switch.
Ys X: Nordics is a new installment in the long-running Ys series, featuring Adol Christin traveling through the Obelia Gulf alongside Dogi and Karja. The game introduces a unique storyline element with magical 'Mana Cuffs' linking Adol and Karja, tasking them with fighting mysterious monsters called Greigr. Players are given the freedom to sail across the open ocean with a ship called the Sandras, reminiscent of Assassin’s Creed IV’s sailing mechanics, though ship battles can feel sluggish and repetitive over time.
Gameplay maintains the fast-paced action RPG combat that the Ys series is known for, introducing the innovative Duo Mode where players can control Adol and Karja simultaneously. This mode allows for strategic gameplay, although the balance feels skewed in favor of using Duo Mode over individual character combat. The game also features the Release Line, a system that allows for customizable stat growth, adding depth to character progression.
The game runs on a new engine optimized for the Nintendo Switch, showing modest visual improvements. Despite some resolution and frame rate issues, it is the best-performing entry of the series on this platform. Its soundtrack impressively combines high-energy rock with Scandinavian influences, enhancing the overall experience even if not quite surpassing that of Ys VIII. Ys X offers a highly engaging adventure for fans and newcomers, although some new mechanics may not be fully realized.
